From Night Shift to World Titles: My Path to Fitness Mastery
Much like many individuals, my journey into fitness began with utter cluelessness. When I initially stepped into the gym, I was a lost soul, bouncing between fad diets When I first stepped into a gym, I had no clue what I was doing. I jumped from one fad diet to another, spending hard-earned cash on glossy workout magazines, overhyped supplements, and ineffective programmes. Despite all the effort, I had nothing to show for it.
Add to that my uncontrollable sweet tooth and a near-obsessive love for doughnuts. For most of my teens and twenties, my diet revolved around chocolate, lollies, Vegemite and cheese sandwiches, and takeaway.
Fitness wasn’t a priority, and I didn’t know what a calorie or a macronutrient was until I turned 30. I’d never sipped a protein shake or lifted a dumbbell until I hit 29.
I was a classic “skinny-fat” guy—low muscle tone with excess body fat. My self-esteem was rock-bottom, and I lacked the confidence to take my shirt off. I felt stuck, dreaming of a chiselled physique but convinced my genetics, junk food habits, and demanding night-shift job would keep that dream out of reach.
Everything changed when I turned 30. I decided to leave behind the late-night chocolate binges and sugary vending machine trips. It was time to figure out how to transform my body for good.
During my night shift, I immersed myself in nutrition and training science. I became obsessed, devouring scientific journals and applying what I learned to my life. Slowly but surely, I built a plan that worked.
It wasn’t easy. It took 12 to 18 months of relentless dedication, but I eventually achieved the best shape of my life—all while working night shift. That’s when I decided to push myself further by entering my first amateur bodybuilding competition. I won first place and went on to compete in multiple events, even representing Team Australia at the World Titles.
And here’s the kicker: my transformation was achieved naturally—no performance-enhancing drugs, ever.
